Heute stelle ich euch meine große Liebe vor. Hab mich lange davor gedrückt, diesen Blog zu schreiben. Manchmal ist es schwer jemand zu schildern warum man etwas perfekt findet, wenn es doch 1000 Kleinigkeiten sind, die diese Einzigartigkeit ausmachen. Doch ich werde versuchen mein Bestes zu geben.
Today I’d like to introduce you to my big love. I tried to avoid this blog for a while because I found it so hard to explain why this is the One! It’s 1000 small things that makes this City so perfect to me, but I’ll to my best to tell you why it is as it is. Something that will last!
Ich bin viel gereist, doch London war nicht nur meine erste Liebe, es ist meine große Liebe. Das kann ich sagen, nachdem ich nach aktuellem Stand bereits 8x dort war, und auch weiterhin versuchen werde mindestens 1x im Jahr dort zu sein.
Da ich oft gefragt werden, was man alles in London machen soll und gerade die Praktischen Dinge oft die interessantesten sind habe ich hier eine kleine „Praktisches und To Do’s“ Liste erstellt.
I travelled a lot in the past, but London wasn’t just my first, it’s my big love. I can tell this after visiting it 8 times so far and I will continue visiting once a year if it fits my plans.
Many people ask my advice about what to do in London, so I wrote down a list of practical things, and also things I would recommend to do.
Ich werde euch jetzt nicht mit Geschichten über die Tower Bridge und das London Eye Langweilen, denn die Top 10 kennt vermutlich jeder. Dies soll mehr ein praktischer Führer und ein „Geheimtippguide“ sein. Wobei die Tipps von mir nun auch wieder nicht so geheim sind, doch dazu könnt ihr euch am Ende eine eigenen Meinung machen 🙂
I’ll not bore you with stories about the Top 10 of London like the Tower Bridge and the London Eye, because that you know probably already. This is more like a practical guide with some secret advices … well, not so secret probably, but you can make your own opinion about that 🙂
Ankunft in London / Wie komme ich in die Stadt:
Heathrow: Von dort geht eine U-Bahn direkt in die Stadt, Dauer in die Stadt ca. 1,5 Std. Freut euch schon auf 1,5 Stunden „This is a Piccadilly Line Service to Crockfoster. The next Station is … Mind the gap between the train and the platform.” Ohrwurm!
Standsted: Der rosafarbene Terravision Bus fährt regelmäßig in die Innenstadt – Victoria und Liverpool Station. Die Kosten sind im Vergleich zum Zug viel günstiger und läuft unproblematisch. Der Standstead Express hat allerdings auch attraktive Frühbucher-Angebote.
The Arrival / How to get into the City:
Heathrow: The Metro goes directly from the Airport into the City Center. It takes app. 1.5 hrs , depending on the location of the hotel. Be prepared for 1.5 hrs of „This is a Piccadilly Line Service to Crockfoster. The next Station is … Mind the gap between the train and the platform.” Earworm!
Standsted: The pink Terravision bus goes Downtown – Victoria and Liverpool Station. It’s usually pricier then the train and it’s very easy to find. The Standstead Express has attractive Early-Booking-Offers.
U-Bahn: Die Oyster Card gibt’s an den Automaten am Flughafen. Einfach eine neue Karte rauslassen und entsprechend aufladen. Mit 10 Pfund pro Tag pro Person sollte man locker auskommen. 5 Pfund sind dann noch Pfand für die Karte. Wenn Ihr wieder heim fahrt gebt beim Automaten einfach die Karte zurück. Dann bekommt man das restliche Geld auf der Karte und die 5 Pfund Pfand zurück. Die leere Karte darf man behalten.
Das U-Bahn Netz ist perfekt ausgebaut und wirklich idiotensicher zu benutzen. Am Wochenende sind gerne mal Wartungsarbeiten an verschiedenen Streckenabschnitten, hier sollte man immer den Lautsprecheransagen lauschen.
Metro: You get your oyster card at one of the oyster machines on the airport. Just request a new card. 5 Pounds are deposit. With 10 Pounds per person per day you should be fine. When going back home you can return the card at one of the machine and get a refund of the unused money and the deposit.
The Metro System is super easy and spread out in the whole city. Just be aware of maintenance work on some lines during the weekends so listen to the announcements in the metro.
Welches Hotel: Es gibt super viele Hotels in unterschiedlichsten Preiskategorien in der Stadt. Aus meiner Sicht ist es schlussendlich egal wo man ist, wichtig ist einzig, dass eine U-Bahn-Station in der Nähe ist. www.booking.com ist da z.B. eine Hilfreiche Plattform. Das Premier Inn London City Aldgate ist für mich persönlich das perfekte Hotel in perfekter Lage mit guter Preis/Leistung. Nur 5-10 Gehminuten vom Tower of London entfernt und ebenfalls nur 5-10 Gehminuten von der Liverpool Street und dem Spitalfield Market, einem meiner Lieblingsflecken in London entfernt. Und natürlich ist die nächste U-Bahn Aldgate nur 2 Minuten entfernt. Frühstück ist nicht dabei, doch da ich immer auswärts frühstücke (siehe etwas weiter unten bei Essen) ist das für mich nicht wichtig.
Hotel: There are so many hotels in different price categories in the city. In my opinion it doesn’t matter where you stay as long as there’s a metro station within walking distance. www.booking.com might for example be helpful in finding a nice place to stay.
My favourite hotel is the Premier Inn London City Aldgate. Perfect located within 5-10 minutes walking distance to the Tower of London, the Spittalfield Market and just 2 minutes for the next metro Station Aldgate. Breakfast is not included but you can book it. But as I like to eat out for breakfast (please find my notes below under “Food”)
City Pass: Immer praktisch, denn hier hat man u.a. einige freie Eintritte (z.B. London Eye, Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral), man darf an Warteschlangen vorbei gehen (z.B. beim Tower, bei St. Paul’s Cathedral), eine Themse Bootsfahrt ist gratis dabei. Außerdem gibt es einen Nachlass bei einer Hop on Hop off Tour, und und und. Auch die Oyster Card kann schon vorab dort gekauft werden.

City Pass: Always worth to spend the money because you have free entrance to some attractions (f.e. And you can buy the Oyster Card in advance if you like.

Hop on Hop Off: Immer zu empfehlen, da man innerhalb von 3 Stunden die ganze Stadt bzw. die Highlights sieht.

Themsefahrt nach Greenwich: Die Apartmenthäuser am Ufer der Themse, das Wirtschafts- und Bankenviertel und am Ende der bezaubernde Stadtteil Greenwich sind definitiv die ca. einstündige Flussfahrt wert. Und im Greenwich Observatorium läuft dann auch der Null Meridian durch (GMT = Greenwich Mean Time). Tipp: sich dann Chinese Take Away holen und im Park Mittagessen.
Themse Cruise to Greenwich: It’s an amazing ride where you pass all this apartment buildings in old brick harbour buildings, the economy and bank center and in the end Greenwich. It’ll take app. 1 hour to get there and then you can spend some time in visiting the observatory with the zero meridian (GMT = Greenwich Mean Time). I also recommend some Chinese take away and a lunch break in the park.
Shoppen: Super in der Oxford Street, Carnaby Street und Regent Street. Nicht zu vergessen die zahlreichen Flohmärkte (siehe weiter unten Absatz “Flohmarkt” und die Second Hand Länden in East London (siehe weiter unten unter „Streetart“).
Shopping: Perefect spots are Oxford Street, Carnaby Street and Regent Street. Not to forget all the flee- and streetmarkets (please find some notes below at “Fleemarket” and “Streetart”)
Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour: Für Fans und Film-Interessierte ein absolutes MUSS! Unbedingt vorher Tickets buchen . Ich empfehle den Tourstart um 10 Uhr. Je nach Lage ist dann eine Abfahrt am Hotel um 8 Uhr nötig. Mit der U-Bahn bis zur Euston Train Station. Ab Euston einen Zug nach Watford Junction (dauert je nach Zug ca. 20-30 Minuten). Von dort geht direkt an der Bahn Station ein Shuttlebus zum Studio (dauert ca. 5-10 Minuten). Es empfiehlt sich, 30 Minuten vor Tourstart beim Studio zu sein. Vor Ort muss nämlich dann am Schalter noch das Ticket ausgedruckt werden und dann geht’s auch schon los. Man sollte vor Ort mindestens 3 Stunden einplanen und genug Geld für Fotos, Videos, Souveniers und Butterbier dabei haben. Aber es ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert. Super genial!
Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour: A Must for all Fans and Movie interested. Prebook your ticket. I would recommend the tour at 10 a.m. Depending on the location of your hotel you should leave there at 8 a.m., get by metro to the Euston train station, get a ticket to Watfort Junction which will take depending on the train 20 – 30 minutes and hop then in the shuttle bus to the studio. You should be 30 minutes before the start of the tour at the studio. There you have to print your ticket on one of the machines and then the fun can start. It will take at least 3 hours to see everything. Bring enough money for pictures, videos , souveniers and butterbeer! So worth to visit! So much fun!
Aussicht über die Stadt: Wenn man keine Platzangst hat kann man in der St. Paul’s Cathedral auf die Kuppel gehen. Super schöner Ausblick und tolle Atmosphäre, durch die verschlungenen Treppen und Leitern um die/in der Kuppel an deren Spitze zu steigen. (Fotos unten von meinem lieben Kollegen Bernhard Loos)
Eine weitere Möglichkeit ist „The Shard“, das neueste Hochhaus der Stadt. Ich war noch nicht oben, doch es soll sehr beeindrucken sein.
Viewpoints: If you are not afraid to hights or have claustrophobia it would be a good plan to walk up to the roof of St. Paul’s Cathedral. (Photos below from by colleague Bernhard Loos) There are many narrow steps up to the top.
Another option is the top of the newest skyscraper “The Shard”. I haven’t been there but I heard the best.
Flohmarkt: Es gibt natürlich extrem viele Flohmärke in London, doch der Portobello Road Market ist sicher der Berühmteste und einer der Schönsten. Allerdings sehr überlaufen, also früh aufstehen, am besten schon um 8 / 9 Uhr vor Ort sein und dann ist man durch bevor die großen Massen kommen.
Auch wunderschön ist der Spitalfields Market, welcher viele Stände von lokalen Künstlern und Designern hat, welche Ihre Produkte feilbieten. Wenn man noch Wert auf Einzelstücke oder etwas besonders legt, ist man dort sehr gut aufgehoben. Bitte vorher unbedingt auf die o.g. Website schaun, denn der Designermarkt ist nicht jeden Tag.
Fleemarket: There are very many fleemarkets in London, but the most famous and pretties is the Portobello Road Market. But this place is crazy overcrowded. It would be the best to get there very early like 8-9 a.m. So you can head off soon enough to advoid the masses of people.
Another beautiful market, but more of a streetmarket is the Spitalfields Market where local artists and designers sell their products. If you like handmade or unique objects you have to get there. Please find on the website the opening times and different dates as the designer market isn’t every day.
Streetart: Von einem Kollegen einmal empfohlen und seitdem immer wieder gerne von mir besucht ist die Alternative London Walking Tour (Dauer ca. 1,5 – 2 Std.), in welcher einem ein Local Guide die Streetart in East London zeigt. Da sich die Graffitis ja ständig ändern, kann man das immer wieder machen und es wird nie langweilig. Bezahlt wird am Ende nach dem „Zahl so viel wie du hast und was dein Budget dir erlaubt“-Prinzip, was ich ebenfalls sehr charmant finde. Man sollte sich jedoch definitiv anmelden. Der Veranstalter bietet auch noch andere Touren an, am besten einfach mal auf der Website etwas durchklicken. Der Stadtteil, in welchem man sich hier bewegt ist mein persönlich liebster Fleck Londons, da hier alles etwas entspannter abläuft, viele Second Hand Länden, am Wochenende nette Straßenmärkte, coole Leute, etc. Man kann also nach der Tour auch noch wunderbar in diesem Eck Londons verweilen.
Streetart: From a colleague recommended and since then very well frequented from myself is the Alternative London Walking tour (duration 1.5 – 2 hrs) where a guide shows and explains the street art of East London and the Area itself. As the graffiti’s change a lot it’s always worth to visit. You pay in the end as much as you budget allows or as much as you want to give which is very charming. Please don’t forget so sign in. The organizers offer some other Tours and Experiences as well so maybe you want to have a look on their website. This part of London itself is one of my favourite spots in London with many Second Hand stores, streetmarkets on the weekends, cool people, aso. So when the Walking Tour is finished you can wander around in this lovely area for some more time.
Essen: Geniales Frühstück im Breakfast Club oder im Straits Times Kopitiam (die Bagel sind der Hammer und die Besitzerin ist eine Perle). Herrliches Japanisches Essen für kleines Geld gibt’s bei „The Japanese Canteen“.
Natürlich war ich auch im Hard Rock Cafe London, welches direkt am St. James Park liegt, wobei ich der Fairness halber sagen muss, das es eher klein ist, und sicher nicht das schönste HRC, in welchem ich bisher war (14 HRC’s bislang). Aber das Esssen ist gut und das Personal wie üblich super freundlich. Eine Reservierung ist aufgrund der Lokalgröße daher definitiv zu empfehlen.
Lecker Burger gibt es auch im Maxwell’s und dieses kann ich euch auch deshalb ans Herz legen weil gleich daneben Laduree Paris eine Filiale hat.
Was ein definitives Erlebnis ist, ist ein Boots-Restaurant-Ausflug mit einem lecker Abendessen, stimmungsvoller Hintergrundmusik und dabei dem Panorama Londons bei Nacht, an welchem man bequem vorbei schippert. Dies ist keine besonders kostengünstige Unternehmung, jedoch für besondere Anlässe sicher eine nette Idee. Nicht vergessen einen Tisch zu reservieren.
Es würde den Rahmen des Blogs sprengen alle leckeren Restaurants Londons aufzuführen, am einfachsten ist es schlussendlich, wen man geht einfach auf Tripadvisor geht und in seiner Umgebung ein Lokal mit guten Bewertungen sucht.
Food: Great Breakfast in served at the Breakfast Club or at Straits Times Kopitiam (the Bagels are awesome and the owner is super sweet). Awsome Japanese Food is served at the Japanese Canteen.
Of course I would never miss to visit the Hard Rock Cafe, which is in this case located at the St. James Park. It’s a bit small and not one of the pretties HRCs I have ever been (14 so far), but the food is good and the staff is as nice as always. I would recommend a Reservation as the amount of tables is not so big.
Good Burgers are also served ath Maxwells which is perfectly located as the Laduree Paris is almost opposite of it.
If you have a special occasion to celebrate a dining boat might be a nice idea. Good food, nice background music and London at night just floating by the window are the best conditions for a lovely evening. It’s a bit expensive, but definetly a special event. Don’t forget to make your reservation in advance.
There are too many great dinging places for mention them all in my blog. In the end it’s the easiest way to go on tripadvisor and find a good restaurant in the area.

Was kann ich sonst noch erzählen? Die Londoner sind extrem nett, die Stadt lädt jeden ein, sich treiben zu lassen. Es wird einem nie langweilig, man kann jedoch auch jederzeit einen ruhigen Flecken finden, um sich etwas aus der Hektik zu verabschieden. Auch als Alleinreisende/r ist das überhaupt kein Thema. Hatte noch nicht ein einziges Mal ein ungutes Gefühl wenn ich unterwegs war, auch nicht nachts in der U-Bahn.
What else can I say? The London people are super kind, the city itself invites everybody to wander. It never gets boring but there are enough possibilities to find a quiet spot and hide from the hectic and noise of the city. For solo travellers it’s a perfect destination. I never felt uncomfortable when I was there, not even during the night in the metro.
