Möchte man eine Reise in die USA machen, findet sich in der Regel relativ schnell ein Reisepartner. Möchte man eine Wanderreise machen, dünnt sich das Feld dann schon merklich. Und möchte man das ganze auch noch mit Camping, also low budget angehen steht man gerne mal alleine da, mit sich und seiner Idee. Mir so geschehen in 2014.
If you wanna travel to the US it’s not hard to find a travel companion. If you wanna go on a hiking trip, the people who wanna join get less. But if you wanna do it in a low budget camping version, you are by yourself. On your own with the idea of a trip. So happend to me in 2014.
Für mich stand außer frage, dass ich den Westen nicht nur bereisen wollte- das hatte ich mit Auto auf die Amerikanische Art (von Aussichtspunkt zu Aussichtspunkt im klimatisierten Auto fahren) schon gemacht. Ich wollte wandern. Und ich wollte in keine deutsche Reisegruppe, wenn sich z.B. Dörte bei Horst-Dieter beschwert, das die Klimaanlage so zieht. Ich war noch nie in einer Reisegruppe, doch genau so stelle ich mir das vor. Also die Antwort: englischsprachig muss es sein. Dann kann ich notfalls besser weghören, falls Karen sich beschwert das im Auto die ganze Zeit Johnny Cash läuft (*gg*) und für meine Sprachkenntnisse ist es auch super.
I knew that I didn’t just want to travel to the West of US – I did that already the American Way (Viewpoint-Hopping in an airconditioned car). I wanted to hike. And I didn’t wanted to make it with a German travelling group of people where for example Horst-Dieter would compain about the drift of the aircondition. I never travelled with a group of Germans, but I thought it might be like that. My problems solution was an english travel group where it would be in worst case easier for me not to listen if for example Karen was complaining about listening to Johnny Cash for hours (#thegermanplayedthatforawhile). And it would be great for my english skills.
Google hatte in der Sekunde die Antwort mit Grand American Adventures, einem Reiseveranstalter, welcher international Kleingruppenreisen u.a. für Aktivurlauber anbietet.
I found the perfect ally for this project on google. Grand American Adventures is a company that offers amongst others small group hiking tours.
Habe mich relativ schnell für eine 10-tägige Wanderreise durch den Westen der USA mit Las Vegas – Zion National Park – Bryce Canyon – Arches National Park / Canyonlands – Monument Valley – Grand Canyon – Las Vegas entschieden. Und natürlich habe ich ein Doppelzimmer und geteiltes Zelt mit einer mir unbekannten Person gleichen Geschlechts gebucht. War nochmal billiger und wenn ich das schon mache, dann richtig.
I chose a 10 days hiking and camping trip through the West of the US with Las Vegas – Zion National Park – Bryce Canyon – Arches National Park / Canyonlands – Monument Valley – Grand Canyon – Las Vegas. And I booked a shared room/tent, because I wanted to get the full experience.
Ich kam in Las Vegas abends gegen 17.00 an. Außer schnell ins Bett und schlafen war dann aber nicht mehr viel. Hatte dann noch eine „Puffertag“ zum Akklimatisieren und Shoppen in Las Vegas eingeplant bevor ich am Abend meine Zimmergenossin für die nächsten 10 Tage treffen sollte und am nächsten Morgen dann die restliche Gruppe und unsere Guides.
Arriving in Las Vegas at 5 p.m. except falling into bed I didn’t do anything else that day. I still had one day left before I was supposed to meet the group, so enough time to acclimatize and go shopping. And I expected my roomate on the afternoon already.
Las Vegas:
Wer seine Zeit nicht im Casion verbringen mag kann auch andere Möglichkeiten zum Zeitvertreib finden, z.B. das Neon Sign Museum von Las Vegas, dem Friedhof der Neonreklametafeln.
If you don’t like to gamble there are still other things to do in Las Vegas like for example the Neon Sign Museum, the cementery of Neon Signs in Vegas.
Im Norden von Vegas gibt es dann auch noch ein wunderbares Outletcenter, in dem man sich natürlich ebenfalls die Zeit gut vertreiben kann.
In the North of the City is a great Outletcenter where you can spend some time as well.
Zur Fortbewegung wird auch kein Auto gebraucht, da in Las Vegas ein gutes Bussystem durch den Strip bis hoch zum Outlet herrscht. Ca. 10$ pro Tag und die Busse gehen sehr regelmäßig. Gerade nachts ist sehr spannend den Strip damit rauf und runter zu fahren. Die Gehsteige platzen ja vor Menschen, doch vom Bus aus hat man einen angenehmen und umbedrängten Sitzplatz.
You don’t need a car in LV. There are busses going the Strip up and down all day for ~10$/day. The pedestrian walks are overcrowded with people, especially when it gets dark, so it’s a nice option to see the Strip by bus and not get pushed back and forth all the time.
Nach einem ausgefüllten Tag in der 40 Grad heißen Wüste Nevadas und nach einem lecker Burger im Hard Rock Cafe (wenn man das HRC im Casion nimmt, und nicht das am Strip hat man das Lokal samt der Kellner quasi für sich) traf ich dann meine bezaubernde Zimmergenossin Catherine aus Canada, mit welcher ich in der Sekunde des Treffens ein Band der Freundschaft knüfte.
After a nice day with 40 degree celsius in the desert of Nevada and a nice dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe (if you go to the HRC in the HR Casion you have the place and the waiters for yourself, exact opposite like on the Strip) I finally met my roomate Catherine from Canada. We became friends in the second we saw each other!
Las Vegas – Zion National Park
Nach einer kurzen Vorstellrunde, angeleitet durch die zwei liebsten Guides überhaupt, Anita & Nicole, starten wir los. Wir erreichten mittags den Zion Nation Park und bauten unser Camp im lokalen Campingplatz auf. Danach machten wir einen kurzen Spaziergang durch das Tal und dann gings zeitig ins Bett, um für den nächsten Tag fit zu sein.
In the morning we met our group and our Guides, two of the nicest girls: Anita & Nicole. We headed towards Zion National Park and arrived there my noon. After setting up our tents we made a short walk into the Valley and then went to bed/tent early to be ready for the next day.
Zion National Park
Um 6.45 starteten wir bereits los um waren um 7.30 am Einstieg zur Angels Landing Wanderung, DER Wanderung in den USA. Wir erklommen bis 9.00 den Anstieg von 1230 auf 1700 Höhenmeter und gerade an der Spitze durch einige Seile gesichert war dies ein netter Einstieg.
We left at 6.45 a.m. our campsite and started the Angels Landing hike at 7.30. This is one of the most popular hikes in the US. We arrived on the peak at 9.00 a.m. (from 1230 to 1700 m elevation).
Nachmittags sind wir dann durch The Narrows, das Flußbett des Virgin River gewandert. Haben den Fluß ganze 38x durchquert. Man möge nicht unterschätzen wie anstrengend das auf flitschigem Boden und wackeligen Flußsteinen mit Badeschuhen ist. Man könnte auch mit festen Sandalen oder Turnschuhen gehen, je nach dem was man dabei hat.
In the afternoon we hiked in The Narrows, the riverbed of the Virgin River. We crossed the river 38 times, which is indeed very exhausing with bathing shoes on slippery ground with lose riverrocks underneath. You could do the walk with sandals or sneakers as well, depending on which kind of shoes you brought.
Bryce Canyon
Nachdem wir unser Camp abgebaut und einige Fahrstunden zurückgelegt hatten waren wir mittags beim Bryce Canyon. Sind ab dem Sunset Viewpoint die Peek-a-Boo-Loop, einen Rundwanderweg durch den Canyon gegangen. Dh. man geht in den Canyon ganz runter, dann etwas durch, wieder bisschen rauf, bisschen runter, und so weiter. Hier macht man dadurch sicher ordentlich Höhenmeter.
Das Wetter was spektakulär! Sonnenschein – Regen – Gewitter – Springflug – Sonneschein – Regen – Gewitter – Blitze – Sonneschein. Und das binnen 4 Stunden. Der Bryce hat uns alles abverlangt, aber auch alles gegeben.
After we packed our stuff we drove a couple of hours and arrived by noon at the Bryce Canyon. We hiked on Sunset Viewpoint the Peek-a-Boo-Loop down. This roundtrip starts by hiking down to the bottom of the Canyon, the a little up again, back down, and up, and down, and so on, so pretty much elevation in the end.
The weather was spectacular. Sunshine – rain – thunder – lighning – spring floods – sunshine – rain – thunder – sunshine. And this all in between 4 hours. Bryce gave us a hard time, but gave back a lot as well.
Als wir um 16.00 dann zu unserem genialsten aller genialen Campingplätze, ca. 45 Minuten ausserhalb des Bryce Canyon, im Kodachrome Basin State Park gekommen sind war das Gewitter leider auch schon so gut wie da. Konnte gerade noch im trockenen unsere Zelte aufbauen als der Zauber von neuem begann. Anita & Nicole haben in völliger Gelassenheit Hot Dogs gegrillt während wir das Zelt über dem Tisch zu neunt festhielten, damit es nicht weggeblasen wurde. War leider kein Abend zum verweilen am Lagerfeuer was wirklich schade war, da der Campingplatz wirklich ein TRAUM ist!
It was 4 p.m. when we arrived after 45 minutes driving on our campsite in the Kodachrome Basin State Park. Unfortunately the thunderstorm followed us all the way out of the Canyon so we could just set up tents when heavy rain and storm started again. Anita and Nicole were deeply unimpressed and made hot dogs while all nine of us where holding our tent so it didn’t get blown away. I was really dissapointed that we couldn’t sit by a nice bonfire as the campground was soooo beautiful! Well, next time then.
Goblin Valley & Moab (Arches & Canyonlands National Park)
Die Fahrt war diesmal länger und daher machten wir einen Mittagsstopp im Goblin Valley, einem wirklich bezaubernden Fleckchen, das ich jedem Vorbeireisenden empfehlen kann. Hatte mit Catherine und Gemma einen Heidenspass die Gesteinsformationen zu erkunden und entsprechend „ernsthafte“ Fotos zu machen.
As todays driving time was longer than usual we made a lunch break at the Goblin Valley, a really unique place, which I would recommend everybody who’s driving by near there. Had so much fun with Catherine and Gemma exploring the Valley and taking some „serious“ pictures.
Am Nachmittag erreichen wir dann Moab und schlugen unsere Zelt im dortigen Campingplatz auf. Es ging sich dann auch noch ganz leicht eine nette Abendwanderung zu den Windows und dem Delicate Arch aus. Leider war zwecks aufziehendem Gewitter (kam uns aus dem Bryce gefolgt) der Sonnenuntergang nicht zu sehen, doch Hähnchen mit Kartoffelsalat und Ausblick hat trotzdem was für sich.
In the afternoon we arrived in Moab and were setting up tents before we went to some Windows and made a nice evening hike up to Delicate Arch. There was a thunderstorm on it’s way so we couldn’t see the sunset, but with chicken, potato salad and a nice view we still had a great time!
Colorado River Rafting
Wenn es warm ist, und man gerne Stromschnellen und Wasser mag, dann ist Rafting ein absolutes muss in Moab. Als ich diesen Zusatzausflug gebucht hatte wussste ich allerdings noch nicht, dass es kalt sein und regnen würden, und ich Angst vor Stromschnellen und davor ins Wasser zu fallen habe. Sonja ist nicht raftingtauglich!
If it’s warm and you like rapids and water you should go on a rafting trip on the Colorado River in Moab. I signed in for this optional activity before I knew that it would get cold and rainy. And I had no clue that I was afraid of rapids and falling into the river. Sonja is not that kind of girl!
Canyonlands National Park
Eine der wohl beeindruckendsten Wanderungen dieses Urlaubs machten wir an diesem Tag in Canyonlands. Wir gingen ab morgens eine ca. 18 km lange Tour ab dem Elephant Hill bei den Needles. Es war sehr heiß, was nach dem Regen der Vortage für mich persönliche eine Wohltat war. Wir waren auch mit genug Wasser und Proviant für den Tag ausgerüstet, also alles kein Problem. Wundervolle, abwechslungsreiche Landschaften und Gesteinsformationen. Einfach ein perfekter Tag!
One of the most impressive things we did was the 18 km hike in Canyonlands. We started in the moring on Elephant Hill at the Needles. It was hot, but after all the rain and being cold the days before it was a relief to put sunscreen on again. We had enough water and food with us so we were well prepared for the day. Beautiful and different landscapes and rock formations. Simply a perfect day!
Arches National Park & Monument Valley
Am Morgen machten wir noch eine kleine Abschiedtour im Arches NP zu ein paar Windows und zu einem großen Arch, welchen das geschulte Auge als das Set vom Beginn von Indiana Jones III erkennt.
In the morning we made a final hike in Arches NP to some Windows and a big Arch, which some might know as a Set from Indiana Jones III.
Nach einer 3-stündigen Autofahrt waren wir dann bei meinem liebsten Lieblingsflecken Erde, dem Monument Valley. Sind mit einem Navajo Indianer names Jasper und einem großen Jeep ins Tal gefahren und er zeigte uns einige nette Flecken. Natürlich durften der John Wayne Point und der John Fort Point nicht fehlen.
Unser Nachtlager haben wir dann mitten im Tal, zwischen den Mittens aufgeschlagen, unter freiem Himmel.
After a 3 hour drive we arrived at my absolutely favourite place on earth, the Monument Valley. We drove with a Navajo Indian named Jasper and his Jeep into the Valley and he showed us around for a bit. Places like John Wayne Point and John Fort Point were must sees of course.
In the end we set up our camp for a night under the stars in the middle of the Valley close to the Mittens.
Machten mit unseren Stirnlampen dann sogar noch eine Nachtwanderung um eine der Felsformationen und ich durfte den schönsten und klarsten Sternenhimmel sehen, den ich bis damals je gesehen hatte. Die Milchstraße ist dort so klar wie kaum wo anders, da sich im Umkreis von hunderten von Meilen keine andere Lichtquelle befindet.
With our headlights on we made even a short nightwalk around one of the Mittens and I saw the most bright and spectacular starry sky I have ever seen. The Milky Way was so clear as there are no other lights for hundreds of miles.
Ich habe mir von Jasper versichern lassen, das es im Tal keine Schlangen oder Spinnen gibt, habe diese Aussage nicht hinterfragt und somit guten Gewissens, zwischen Catherine und Howard vor Kojoten beschützt meinen Schlafsack ausgebreitet. War eine etwas kalte Nacht und zwecks Vollmond eigentlich viel zu hell, aber eines der beeindruckendsten Dinge, die ich jemals gemacht habe.
Jasper told me that there are no snakes or spiders in the Valley, so I decided to trust him and not think about it when I placed my sleeping bag in between Catherine and Howards, safe from Coyotes and other wild animals. It was a bit of a chilly night and very bright as we had a full moon, but it was for sure one of the best things I’ve ever done!
Grand Canyon
Nach einem traurigen Abschied (sicher nicht für immer) am John Wayne Point des Monument Valley ging es dann zu unserem letzten Abendteuer.
After a sad goodbye from Monument Valley at John Wayne Point (but not forever for sure) we headed towards our last Adventure.
Um 11 Uhr hatten wir unseren ersten Aussichtspunkt am östlichen Ende des South Rim des Grand Canyon erreicht. War nicht mein 1. Mal dort, doch diese Weite und Tiefe ist immer wieder beeindruckend.
At 11 a.m. we arrived on the first viewpoint of the South Rim of Grand Canyon. Not my first time there but the wide and deep Canyon is always breathtaking.
Sind dann zu unserem Campingplatz und mit Aufbau und allem schafften wir es pünktlich zum Sonnenuntergang zurück zum Canyon. Anita & Nicole brachten uns Pizza und Salat und so hatten wir einen perfekten Abend.
Then we drove to our Campground and even with setting up everything we arrived more then perfectly in time for sunset on the Canyon. Anita & Nicole organized some Pizzas and Salad so we had another perfect evening together.
Abends am Lagerfeuer wies uns dann Gemma, unser australisches „Küken“ in die Kunst der Zubereitung von S’mores ein. Was S’mores sind? Man schmilzt am Lagerfeuer Marshmellows, quetscht diese auf einen Keks, legt ein Rippchen Schokolade drauf und nochmal einen Keks und fertig. Warum das S’mores heißt? Wenn du das probierst willst du immer noch mehr (some more).
Back in our camp Gemma, our Australian youngster of the group showed us how to make S’mores. What are S’mores? You melt some Marshmellows, put them on a cookie, put a piece of chocolate on top and squeeze it with another cookie, done. Why it’s called S’mores? Because when you try it, you always want some more.
Grand Canyon
Den Sonnenaufgang um 6.00 genossen und dann eine Wanderung zum Skeleton Point.
Enjoyed Sunrise at 6 a.m. and then hiked down to Skeleton Point.
Bis ganz runter und wieder rauf schafft man an einem Tag angeblich nicht, also gingen wir nur 600 Höhenmeter tief (der ganze Canyon hat ca. 1400 Hm Tiefe) und 10 km weit. Das ganze dauerte 3:15 Stunden. War eine wirklich schöne Wanderung, allerdings sehr überlaufen. Und ich war ein bisschen enttäuscht das wir nicht ganz runter gehen konnten. Im Tal unten ist ein einziger Campingplatz mit kleinen Hütten, in dem man allerdings 1 Jahr Anmeldevorlauf hat.
Hiking all the way down and back up is not doable in one day (they say), so we hiked 600 m elevation down (the canyon is 1400 m deep) and 10 k distance. It took as 3:14 hr in a total. It was a really nice hike, but very overcrowded. And I was a little dissapointed that we couldn’t hike all the way down. There is a campsite with little cabins down there, but you have to make reservations one year ahead.
Nachmittags hatte ein Teil unserer Truppe einen Helikopterflug. Da ich das 2010 schon gemacht hatte blieb ich im Camp und machte Wäschetag, trank Kaffee und genoss unbegrenztes WLAN in einem der Restaurants bei den Campingplätzen.
In the afternoon most members of our group made a helicopter ride. As I made that in 2010 already I decided to make a laundry „party“ by myself, have some coffee and use Wifi on one of the restaurants by the campsites.
Abends wurden wir von Nicole mit gegrillen Steaks verwöhnt und Anita machte uns einen sensationellen Peach Gobbler nach Familienrezept, und dann gings ein letztes Mal in unsere Zelte.
For dinner Nicole made us some wonderul steaks and Anita treated us with a sensational peach gobbbler (family recipe). Then we crawled one last time in our tents.
Grand Canyon to Las Vegas
Wir halfen alle zusammen und reinigten am Morgen gleich die Zelte und das Equipment und wurden danach von Anita mit einem fetten Pancake Frühstück verwöhnt. Und dann hiess es: auf nach Las Vegas. Fuhren die Route 66 durch Seligman, in welchem wir auf einen Burger halt machten. Dann zum Hoover Dam und weiter nach Bolder City auf ein Eis. Nachmittags kamen wir in Las Vegas an und gingen mit einer bereits etwas schrumpfenden Gruppe auf ein Abschiedsdinner.
We cleaned our tents and equipment in the morning and then Anita made us an awesome pancake breakfast before we were leaving for good. We made an en-route stop on the Route 66 in Seligman for a Burger and passed the Hoover Dam on our way to Bolder City for some ice cream.
After we arrived Las Vegas in the afternoon we met, a shrinking group already, for a last dinner in the city.

Unser letzter Morgen und nun verabschiedeten wir uns der Reihe nach, da jeder seinen Heim- oder Weiterflug zu einer anderen Uhrzeit hatte. Waren noch im Hard Rock Cafe frühstücken und dann gings gen Flughafen. Am Ende blieben noch Catherine und ich übrig, wobei Sie heim flog und ich noch weiter an die Ostküste nach New York und Boston.
Our last morning together and we finally had to say goodbye. Had breakfast at the Hard Rock Cafe and then we headed towards the airport. In the end it was just Catherine and me. She went home to Vancouver and I travelled to the Eastcoast, to New York and Boston.
Wie schnell man sich an die Leute einer Gruppe gewöhnt, die man 10 Tage vorher noch garnicht kannte. Wie kurzweilig 10 Tage sein können. Wie schwer der Abschied sein kann, wenn er möglicherweise für immer ist. Wobei dem einen oder anderen schon klar war, dass man sich wieder sehen wird. Auf einer anderen Reise. Auf ein neues Abendteuer. Drum sagte ich nicht Adjeu, sondern nur Auf Wiedersehen. Zu meiner Gruppe und den USA.
How fast you get used to a group of people you didn’t know just 10 days ago. How fast 10 days ran by. How hard a farewell can be which might be forever. Even if I knew that I will meet at least some of the people again. For another trip. For another adventure. So I didn’t really say goodbye, I said „see you“. To the people, and the US.
