After 12 years of abstinence I returned right after my hiking trip in the US West (https://thetravelcatsite.wordpress.com/2016/08/21/wandern-im-westen-der-usa-hiking-the-us-west/) to the city that never sleeps.
Es ist immer spannend nach so langer Zeit an einen Ort zurück zu kehren, in einem anderen Alter, in anderen Lebensumständen, kurz: als anderer Mensch.
It’s always exhiting to return after a long time to a place, you have been before, in another age, with different life circumstances, short: as a different person.
Geplant war meine NY Reise allein. Da die Hotelpreise für Einzelzimmer in Manhatten einfach verrück sind hatte ich mich für ein Hotel in New Jersey entschieden. Hier mein erster Rat: egal wie klein die Reisekasse ist, sucht euch eine Unterkunft nahe dem U-Bahn-Netz. Nach New Jersey gehen nur Busse und das kostet einen immer 1 Stunde bis man nach Manhatten kommt. Wenn es auch zweifelsohne interessant ist zu sehen, wie man außerhalb von Manhatten lebt ist es a) nervig jeden Tag so weit zu fahren und, was noch viel wichtiger ist gehen b) die Busse immer nur bis 23 Uhr. Und das in einer Stadt die niemals schläft. Anyway.
I planned the trip solo and that’s why I chose a hotel in New Jersey. Singelroom rates in Manhatten are crazy! But: if you are going solo to NY and no matter how low your travel budget is stay within the metrolines. To take the bus from New Jersey to Manhattan takes 1 hour and after 11 p.m. are no busses running at all. And that in the city that never sleeps. Of course its interesting to see the houses and how people life outside of Manhattan, but it’s still to much efford. Anyway.
Wie gesagt war die Reise allein geplant doch kurzfristig hatte sich dann noch eine Freundin angeschlossen. Wir erreichten NY via Amtrak (waren vorher noch in Boston) gegen mittag. Bin nach dem Hotel check-in sofort nach Brookly aufgebrochen, da ich dort im BAM Opera House ein Konzert von Devendra Banhart, Stephen Merritt und keinem geringeren als Sam Beam aka. Iron & Wine besuchte. Was für ein Highlight für den Start in NY.
As I said I planned my trip on my own but last minute a friend joined me. So we arrived New York via Amtrak (we spend some days in Boston first) by noon. After the check-in I hurried to Brooklyn to join a concert of Devendra Banhart, Stephen Merritt and the one and only Sam Beam aka. Iron & Wine at the BAM Opera House. What a perfect start for NY.
Samstag und Sonntag morgen findet von 10.00 bis 16.00 Uhr in der 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar ein Brunch für 39 $ statt. Reservierung nicht möglich aber auch nicht nötig. Wir waren um 10 Uhr dort und da war kaum noch jemand. Es waren vmtl. vor allem Touristen da, weil der Blick auf das Empire State Building einfach unschlagbar ist, genauso wie das Essen. Empfehlung !!
Saturday and Sunday morning is at the 230 Firfth Rooftop Bar from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. a brunch for 39 $ per person. Reservation is not possible but not neccessary anyway. We arrived at 10 a.m. and there were almost nobody else. It’s mostly tourists that go there because of the amazing view at the Empire State Building and the good food. Recommendation!
Was niemals fehlen darf ist natürlich der Times Square und das Flat Iron Building. Am Times Square gibt es übrigens auch ein Hard Rock Cafe und einen Bubba Gump Shrimps. Falls einen der kleine Hunger packt und man keine Lust auf Hot Dogs hat, das wäre eine super Alternative.
What you should never miss is Times Square and the Flat Iron Building. At Times Square is a Hard Rock Cafe and a Bubba Gump Shrimps restaurant, so if you’re hungry and don’t want a Hot Dog then this is a perfect opportunity.
Wenn wir schon vom Essen sprechen: „Sex and the City“ Fan oder nicht, man muss unbedingt, unbedingt, unbedingt in eine der Magnolian Bakery Filialen. Der Käsekuchen mit flüssigem Karamel und Pecan Nüssen wird euer Leben verändert. Meins hat er in jedem Fall bereichert, weshalb ich jeden Tag den ich NY verbrachte habe 1x in die Magnolian Bakery ging, um besagten Foodporn-Kuchen zu kaufen. Sooooo lecker! Talking about food: Weather you are a fan of „Sex and the City“ or not, you must must must go to the Magnolian Bakery. The Caramel Cheescake with pecan will change your life. Well, it changed my definetly so I went every day to the Magnolian Bakery from now on. Dieses Mal habe ich auch einen Spaziergang über die Brooklyn Bridge geschafft und bin dann auf direktem Weg zum One World Trade Center und dem 9/11 Memorial gegangen. Der Tower und die Memorial-Brunnen sind ohne viel aufhebens zu besichtigen, doch möchte man in das Memorial muss man sich lange anstellen (was ich nicht getan habe) und sich dann einer Sicherheitskontrolle unterziehen (weshalb man so lange ansteht). Ich würde das ganz am frühen Morgen machen. Ich war nachmittags dort, und da ist dann kein Durchkommen mehr. Sehenswert? In jedem Fall, denn wer weiß nicht mehr, was er am 11. September 2001 gemacht hat, als die Flugzeuge in die Türme gekracht sind.
This time I made a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and went then to the One World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial. The Tower and the Memorial itself can be visited without reservation or anything but if you wanna go into the Memorial you should arrive early in the morning. I got there in the afternoon and there was a huge line up so I passed. Worth to see the area? For sure, because everybody knows where they have been when the planes crashed into the towers.
Wenn es um eine gute Aussicht geht, würde ich „Top of the Rock“, die Aussichtsplattform des Rockefeller Center immer dem Empire State Building vorziehen. Einfach aus dem Grund, weil der Ausblick auf den Central Park und Lower Manhatten besser ist. Und man muss kaum anstehen. Und: im Rockefeller Center ist eine Magnolian Bakery 🙂
Looking for a nice birdview I would recommend the „Top of the Rock“, the Obeservation deck on the Rockefeller Center, and not the Empire State Building. The view is better and there is almost no line up. And: there’s a Magnolian Bakery at the Rockefeller Center 🙂
Was war ich für eine lucky TravelCat, dass genau in dem Monat, in dem ich in New York bin ein „Friends“ Pop-up-Cafe war. Musste 2,5 Stunden anstehen, doch um auf DER Couch zu sitzen wäre ich auch länger gestanden.
What a lucky TravelCat I was that right when I was in NYC a „Friends“ Pop-up-Cafe opened for 1 month. I had to wait 2,5 hours to get in, but that’s a price I was happy to pay for sitting on THAT couch in the end.
Was für Städte im Allgemeinen, für NY jedoch besonders empfehlenswert ist, ist eine Hop-on-Hop-off Bustour. Bei der NY Tour ist dann auch noch eine Hudson River Rundfahrt inkludiert. In jedem Fall dazu buchen sollte man die Nachttour. Diese startet dann am Times Square und geht so 1,5 Stunden+-, inklusive Fahrt nach Brooklyn mit Blick auf die Skyline.
What makes sense in every big city is recommended for the Big Apple as well: a hop-on-hop-off-Bustour. It’s even a Hudson River Cruise included. And I would definetly make the Night-Tour as well. It starts at Times Square and takes 1,5 hours +- and includes a ride to Brooklyn with an amazing view at the Skyline.
Die Highline in Soho ist seit ein paar Jahren sicher auch ein Must-See im Big Apple. Eine alte Hochbahn wurde hier begrühnt und für die Anwohner als quasi Park-Ersatz angelegt.
The Highline in SoHo opened a couple of years ago and is for sure a hotspot. An old Highline was changed into a big park for the neighbours there.
Ich bin sicher man kann 1 Monat in NY verbringen und hat trotzdem nicht alles gesehen, doch für mich persönlich sind das immer wieder die Must Sees.
You could probably spend a month in NY and still haven’t seen it all, but for me personally speaking these are the must-sees.
